Tune Into Nature
CLOUD FORMATIONS
Why the Cloud?
Our coastal microclimate is a gem in a world that is increasingly prone to high heat and fire. The extreme heat inland draws the oceanic mist in as it forms a thick "marine layer" overhead. A cloud of fresh water vapor keeps us coastally moderate with a temperate and lush surrounding vegetation, helping to protect us from the danger of wildfires.
The Cloud has been formed with a passion for saving trees and the priceless ecological function that they perform. The large Spruce trees stand strong. Their branches reaching out like long arms, covered with magnificent green needles that collect the water vapor from the air bringing droplets to the ground, providing a vibrant natural habitat beneath the forest canopy. If there are no trees standing tall to catch the water vapor from the air then the ground becomes dry and baren.
Trees bring us water.
Water is life.
Sam and his crew spent the spring and summer of 2021 working an acre of land on the southern Oregon coast. We cleared garbage, removed shrubbery, and transformed a thick, decaying understory into a place where friends could gather, camp and enjoy dinners.
Approximately six acres of the nearby forest had already been clearcut a few years previously. In August of 2021, the loggers returned to take all the remaining timber on the surrounding 55 acres. Heavy equipment rolled in and fellers began cutting down another significant number of trees to the North. Walking the land after it had been deforested was devastating.
It felt like the aftermath of a war zone.
All too often a developer approaches land without consideration for natural ecosystems.
There was no regard for the existing community of the natural flora and fauna currently living and thriving there. Motivated only by monetary gains, these trees were taken down to pave the way for intensive development. Sam and his friends knew that they had to do something to prevent the destruction of this priceless ecosystem. And so, the Cloud was formed.
Sam, founder of The Cloud, rallied the troops in an effort to protect the integrity of the land. His passion for preserving nature led him to reach out to his community and create a shared vision that would save the trees. In the following days he urgently contacted local organizations trusting that there would be a solution. With no success at the organizational level, Sam turned to family (his sister Liza) and like-minded friends that were on the scene (specifically Madison, Robbie and Ethan).
The word got out and
CLOUD DREAMS BECAME REALITY
After many months of negotiations with the developer and working closely with a broker,
the deal was sealed in the Spring of 2022.
The Cloud is still in it's formative stages and we invite hard working, clear headed folks to connect with the land. We are fully engaged in the development of an Eco Village & Sanctuary. We are building a shared space that welcomes community to form through art and education. The Cloud aspires to inspire others to connect back to their roots and thrive in the natural world.
The Clouds approach to building an Eco Village
We are committed to preserving the natural integrity of the environment and keeping the surrounding forests healthy and vibrant. The already clear cut portion of the land is being designated as common space, to be utilized for open space, growing gardens, implementing food forests, building greenhouses, setting up off grid and grid tied energy production, clean water management, natural construction methods and more! There will be a large timber framed lodge built to shelter us while we work and also when we gather for events. Education, ceremony and celebration will open the Cloud for connection with the greater community.
